Probably some of you know that UNESCO has proclaimed 2014 the International Year of Crystallography. Why? 100 years ago Max von Laue was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics "for his discovery of the diffraction of X-rays by crystals". A year later the father and son Sir William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg received the Physics prize "for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays”.
